What're the treatments for anal itching?
Treatment of anal itching depends upon what is causing the problem. Gently wipe your anus well with toilet paper after having a BM. Use soap and water to wash between your legs each day. Dry this area well after washing. Wear cotton
underwear and loose-fitting clothes. Do not use soaps or perfumes in the anal area that may bother your skin.
After bowel movements, the anal area should be cleaned with absorbent cotton or soft, plain toilet or facial tissue, which may be moistened with warm water. Dusting with cornstarch or a small amount of talc may combat moisture. Corticosteroid creams, antifungal creams such as miconazole, or soothing suppositories may be used. Foods that can cause anal itching are avoided for a while to see if the condition improves. Clothing should be loose and bed clothing lightweight. If the condition does not improve and a doctor suspects cancer, a skin specimen may be obtained for examination.
Medications also may be part of your treatment plan. An over-the-counter (OTC) cream or ointment containing hydrocortisone (Cortaid, Preparation H), applied sparingly to the affected area twice a day for up to two weeks, may reduce inflammation and itching. A protective ointment that contains zinc oxide (Desitin, Balmex) also may help. If your symptoms are worse at night, your doctor may also prescribe an antihistamine to reduce itching until topical treatments take effect. With proper treatment, most people experience complete relief from anal itch. |
