What causes liver failure?
A number of liver diseases, such as biliary atresia, metabolic liver disease and hepatitis, can lead to liver failure as they progress into late stages. The most common causes of liver failure are hepatitis B, hepatitis C, long term and excessive alcohol consumption, cirrhosis, hemochromatosis, and malnutrition.
The causes of acute liver failure, however, are often different. These include acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose, hepatitis viruses, reactions to certain prescription medications, ingestion of poisonous wild mushrooms. |
